The 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention Committee is happy to pre despatched the papers of the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention. we're lucky to have had the college of California at Berkeley, Ca!., as our host for the 5th nationwide assembly of this type. The circulation to the West Coast for this earlier Cryogenic Engineering convention was once caused partly via the massive focus of missile actions that are to be discovered there. reputation of cryogenic operations and strategies within the mis sile box is given in lots of of the incorporated papers. The collage of California was once definitely wen suited to the sort of assembly as this since it used to be right here that a lot early paintings was once performed in cryogenics. This pioneering in cryogenics remains to be obvious this day within the operation of the 72-in. bub ble chamber on the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. The Cryogenic Engineering convention salutes the missile and the cryogenic pioneers of the day prior to this and at the present time on the collage of California. precise thank you needs to visit Dr. D. N. Lyon from the Low-Temperature Laboratory of the college of California, who as chairman of the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention Committee has labored tirelessly to extend the stature of this convention. vii ACKNOWLEDGMENT The Cryogenic Engineering convention Committee is deeply thankful for the ongoing aid and curiosity of the subsequent agencies who made the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention attainable. Molecular Engineering for Advanced Materials

A big element of molecular engineering is the `property directed' synthesis of huge molecules and molecular assemblies. man made services has complex to a kingdom which permits the meeting of supramolecules containing millions of atoms utilizing a `construction equipment' of molecular construction blocks.

The catalyst used for conversion is the weIl-known chromium oxide on alumina. The liquid is produced under pressure, but in a subcooled condition, to facilitate transport from the plant to the storage tanks. Before hydrogen of 99% purity as producedbythe feed gas plant can be liquefied, all impurities have to be removed to insure continuous safe and trouble-free operation of the plant. The purification of the feed gas is an integral part of the liquefier and is accomplishedby adsorption. , CO, N2 , and A by adsorption, and trace quantities of any of these components by filtration.

Barrera, B. Sorenson, and H. P. Hernandez, "72-inch bubble chamber fast temperature measurements on expanded gas," UCID 753 (June 30, 1959). A-4 LARGE-SCALE PRODUCTION, HANDLING, AND STORAGE OF LIQUID HYDROGEN P. C. Vander Arend Air Products, Inc. Allentown, Pennsylvania With the engineering, design, and construction of large-scale liquid hydrogen production facilities under direction of the Air Force, liquid hydrogen has become a propellant available on a sustained and economic basis. A short review of the past few years shows how tremendous the progress in hydrogen technology has been.

The chamber was assembled and a testperformed to determine the amount of deflection during operation. The deflections of the casting were measured at internal pressures up to 70 psig. at which pressure it deflected 15 mUs [5]. At the design maximum operating pressure of 120 pSig, the casting should deflect 25 mUs. 42 H. P. Hernandez Fig. 4. Chamber casting, showing inflatable gasket. A second test was made with only the chamber and the hydrogen shield to determine the reaction force in the glass.
