Indeed, it is probably not wise to distinguish between his fiction and non-fiction as it is perhaps another of those artificial boundaries that Ghosh insistently interrogates, the overcoming of which constitutes one of the central threads running throughout his work. Many of his works seek to deconstruct, or at least put into question, the value of distinguishing between ‘fact’ and ‘fiction’. For to speak of ‘facts’ immediately involves some taxing epistemological problems: whose ‘facts’? In whose interests are ‘facts’ deployed?
The narratives are connected by a series of overlapping motifs and metaphors that bring into juxtaposition two disciplines and modes of writing – ethnography and historiography – that are customarily seen as separate, each with their own concerns and modes of operation, each focusing on different ‘objects’ of knowledge. In an Antique Land suggests that such partitioning of knowledge into separate domains is only one of a series of parallel ruptures that have divided the modern world: divisions of ‘identity’, of geography, of politics, of history.
